Chairman of the National Independent Inquiry Commission, Major General (Retd) A L M Fazlur Rahman, on Wednesday said intelligence and security agencies failed to act during the deadly BDR mutiny of February 2009, allowing the violence to unfold unchecked.
Speaking at a press conference in Dhaka, he said, “No effective measures were taken to prevent the mutiny and the killings. The intelligence agencies of that time displayed extreme negligence and failed in their duties.”
The commission chief blamed delayed political decision-making and inaction by the armed forces and police for the escalation of the massacre, which left dozens of army officers dead. He also claimed past commissions tried to mislead the investigation by falsely linking the incident to militancy.
“There are accounts suggesting possible foreign involvement, which are now being verified,” he added.
So far, 158 individuals have been interviewed, with around 50 more pending. The Commission has requested more time to complete the final report, proposing a new deadline of September 30.
