Morshed Alam, chairman of Bengal Group and former Awami League lawmaker, was arrested last night by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from the capital’s upscale Gulshan area.

Confirming the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said a special operation was conducted based on intelligence input. Alam was later taken to the DB headquarters on Minto Road for questioning.

According to DB officials, Morshed Alam is facing multiple cases. While details of the charges were not immediately disclosed, police sources say he will be produced before court today (Wednesday) with a plea for remand for further interrogation.

Alam, who chairs private TV channel RTV, was first elected as a Member of Parliament from Noakhali-2 constituency in 2015. He was re-elected in 2018 and again in the 2024 general elections. He also serves as a trustee board member of People’s University of Bangladesh, a former chairman of Mercantile Bank, and a sponsor director of National Life Insurance.

Liberty News’ city correspondent reports that no official statement has yet been issued by Bengal Group or Alam’s family.

Further details regarding the allegations against him are expected to emerge following court proceedings.
