Lena MacDonald, a bestselling fantasy and romance writer from the United States, has found herself in the middle of a heated controversy after readers discovered an AI-generated prompt mistakenly published in her latest book Darkhollow Academy: Year 2. The error appeared in Chapter 3 of the novel, revealing her use of artificial intelligence to mimic the writing style of another popular author.
The exposed text read:
“I rewrote this section to better align with J. Bree’s style—featuring heightened tension, a gritty atmosphere, and deep emotions hidden beneath supernatural elements.”
This unintended inclusion quickly went viral, with screenshots circulating across social media platforms. Many readers criticized the move, calling it “shameful” and a violation of creative integrity. The book has since been updated on Amazon to remove the controversial section, but the backlash continues.
J. Bree, whose work inspired the AI-assisted rewrite, is a globally recognized name in the fantasy-romance genre. MacDonald’s attempt to emulate Bree’s tone using AI has left fans disappointed and questioning her authenticity.
One reader commented, “This should be grounds for a ban. What’s the point of being an author if you don’t write your own words?” Another remarked, “It’s obvious that some writers are using AI midway—there’s a noticeable shift in tone.”
