The 2026 Bishwa Ijtema, one of the largest Islamic congregations in the world, will be held in March next year instead of its usual January schedule, according to Mufti Kefayatullah Azhari, leader of the Tabligh Jamaat’s Shura-e-Nezam faction.
Speaking at a press conference organised by Tabligh Jamaat Bangladesh (Shura-e-Nezam) at the National Press Club on Monday, Mufti Azhari said the group agreed to hold the event in March following a proposal from the government.
The announcement came a day after Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain told reporters at the Secretariat that, after discussions with both factions of Tabligh Jamaat, the government had decided to organise the Ijtema after the national election.
“The election atmosphere has already begun,” Khalid said, adding, “During this period, law enforcement agencies will be occupied with election duties. Therefore, after consultations with both groups of Tabligh Jamaat, it has been decided that the Bishwa Ijtema will be held after the polls, and both sides have agreed to this arrangement.”
He further said that preparations for a free and fair national election are underway, with no indication of postponement.
“The government continues discussions with political parties, and there have been no major misunderstandings so far,” the adviser added.
