A devastating explosion in Balochistan’s Harnai district, Pakistan, killed 11 coal miners and injured four others on Friday. Authorities suspect an improvised explosive device (IED) was planted on the roadside.

The tragic incident occurred in the Shahrag area of Harnai when a powerful blast struck near a vehicle carrying coal miners. Initially, nine workers were reported dead, and six were injured. However, two of the injured later succumbed to their wounds. Harnai’s Deputy Commissioner, Hazrat Wali Kakar, confirmed the casualties, according to Geo News.

Local sources suggest the explosion was caused by an IED planted along the roadside. Following the incident, security personnel cordoned off the area and transported the dead and injured to nearby hospitals. Some of the injured are in critical condition and are being shifted to Quetta for advanced medical treatment.

Shahrag, known as a coal mining hub, has recently witnessed multiple bomb blasts, but this incident marks one of the most severe in terms of casualties.

According to the Department of Mines officials, most of the affected workers were residents of Swat and Shangla.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that the Balochistan government spokesperson expressed sorrow over the tragic event and announced that an investigation into the blast has been ordered.
