Chaos erupted at Pabna District Court when several BNP activists allegedly assaulted an on-duty policeman during a hearing, prompting immediate arrests and legal action.
Tensions flared on Tuesday (April 15) inside the Pabna District and Sessions Judge Court as six BNP leaders and activists were detained for physically attacking a police officer during a court hearing. The incident occurred after the policeman reportedly prevented them from filming court proceedings.
The detainees were identified as Awal Kabir (38), former president of Ishwardi Municipal Chhatra Dal and current joint convener of the local Swechchhasebak Dal; Sarwar Jahan Shishir (33), an aspirant for Chhatra Dal president; Kalam Khan (40), Rubel Hossain (33), Sabuj Hossain (35), and Zahurul Islam (35). All of the accused are linked to BNP’s local political activities.
According to eyewitnesses, the accused were present for a hearing related to a sabotage case filed on November 15, 2023, in Ishwardi. While the hearing was underway, they began taking photos inside the courtroom. Constable Shah Alam intervened, requesting them to stop recording. In response, the group reportedly assaulted him on the spot.
The officer was later rescued by on-site lawyers and bystanders, then taken to a hospital for treatment. Court authorities quickly detained the individuals following the hearing.
Pabna District Bar Association’s former president and BNP district member secretary, Advocate Masud Khondakar, condemned the act, stating, “Such conduct inside a courtroom is unacceptable. If any BNP member is proven guilty, legal action must be taken.”
Liberty News’ court correspondent states that Court Inspector Rashedul Islam confirmed the arrests and said legal proceedings are underway against the suspects for their involvement in the attack.
