A faction of BNP grassroots activists staged a protest in Bakerganj’s Niamati Union on Friday, voicing strong opposition to what they described as attempts to form a “pocket committee” by the party’s Barishal district convenor, Abul Hossain Khan.

The protest took place in the afternoon at Maheshpur Bazar, where hundreds of leaders and activists from BNP, Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal gathered. Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protesters accused Khan of trying to bypass the party’s constitution by appointing his preferred individuals to leadership roles without broader consultation or democratic process.

“This party has been built through decades of struggle and sacrifice. Leaders who were not even present during movements are now being imposed on us. This is a betrayal of the grassroots,” said one protester.

Speakers warned that sidelining experienced and dedicated activists in favor of loyalists would cause long-term harm to the party. They called on BNP’s central leadership to intervene, investigate the matter, and ensure committees are formed through proper democratic procedures.

Among those present were central Jubo Dal leader Abdur Salam Shikder, local BNP leader Niaz Morshed, former Bakerganj upazila BNP president and ex-union chairman Abdul Malek Master, as well as dozens of other local leaders.

“No individual owns BNP. It belongs to millions of activists who have shed sweat and blood for it,” said one speaker. “We will not accept any undemocratic move to form a pocket committee.”

The protesters warned of launching larger movements if their concerns are ignored. They also stressed that any unilateral decision could break trust within the party and hinder future political efforts.

The protest has sparked reactions across Niamati and surrounding areas, with calls for restoring organizational transparency and discipline within the party.
