The BNP’s top policymaking body, the National Standing Committee, has expressed concerns over an alleged deep-rooted conspiracy to delay the upcoming national election and plans to intensify pressure on the interim government by launching peaceful political programs.
During a virtual meeting held Monday night, chaired by acting party chief Tarique Rahman from London, BNP leaders discussed the growing uncertainty surrounding the election timeline. The meeting took place at the party’s Gulshan office, where senior leaders voiced suspicion over the government’s intent, suggesting that certain factions are strategically attempting to postpone the polls under various pretexts.
Sources within the party indicated that recent sudden movements by different groups on non-critical issues are viewed as part of a larger ploy to manipulate the political climate. BNP leaders warned that any successful attempt to delay elections would severely undermine the country’s democratic system and create room for the rehabilitation of the “fallen Awami League.”
Concerns were further fueled by the recent government decision to suspend the Awami League’s political activities and freeze its registration with the Election Commission pending legal proceedings. The BNP believes this is a calculated tactic to buy time and potentially introduce a ‘king’s party’ favored by the ruling class to retain power indirectly.
The BNP attributed the formation of the current interim government to the mass protests in July, labeling it a hard-earned achievement. Leaders emphasized that failure to conduct elections promptly would pose a grave threat to democracy. They also warned against efforts by influential quarters within the government to depoliticize the country or delay elections for political engineering.
Though no final decision was taken, most committee members supported initiating a non-confrontational movement demanding a fixed election date. They stressed the importance of avoiding any form of political violence or clashes in the streets.
A senior BNP leader stated that while the party has refrained from launching aggressive programs so far, both BNP and its allies may soon announce targeted actions to escalate pressure on the interim government. However, the party wants to honor Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus respectfully and not link his situation to political agitation.
Party insiders confirmed that the BNP will continue its ongoing membership drive over the next two months as part of its movement preparation. Front organizations like Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal have already organized massive rallies in Chattogram and Khulna, with more to follow in Bogura and Dhaka. The Dhaka rally is expected to be the largest, where the BNP will formally declare its firm stance on election timelines.
