BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has claimed that a well-orchestrated attempt is underway to delay the upcoming national election, thereby depriving people of their voting rights.
Speaking via video conference during an emergency joint meeting on Tuesday, organized to finalize programs marking the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that “a deliberate and strategic plot has been launched to postpone the election and strip citizens of their fundamental right to vote.”
He warned that despite the new hope created through the sacrifices of students and masses, a “dark shadow” now looms over Bangladesh’s democratic aspirations. “There is a renewed effort to divide the nation and pit state institutions against each other,” he added.
Citing the period between 1972 and 1975, Fakhrul criticized what he called the Awami League’s autocratic rule and said, “Ziaur Rahman dismantled the one-party system and introduced multi-party democracy, bringing political and economic reforms, including a shift from socialism to a free-market economy.”
Calling Zia the “architect of reform in Bangladesh,” he said Zia’s leadership laid the foundation for a modern democratic state.
Senior BNP leaders, including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretaries, and leaders from Dhaka North and South city units, along with affiliated wings, attended the meeting.
As part of the commemoration, BNP will observe an eight-day program starting May 25. Youth rallies will be held in Dhaka on May 27 and 28, with a discussion on May 29 at Engineers Institution. On May 30, party members will pay tribute at Ziaur Rahman’s grave.
