At least 40 people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat-Shibir supporters in Noakhali Sadar Upazila.
The incident occurred around 5pm on Sunday at Kashem Bazar in Neazpur Union.
According to Fazle Rabbi, publicity secretary of the district Chhatra Shibir, the group had organised a Darasul Quran programme at the Kashem Bazar Jame Mosque on Saturday. A group of Jubo Dal leaders allegedly attacked the event.
In protest, Chhatra Shibir announced another Quranic teaching programme at the same mosque after Asr prayer on Sunday.
Following the announcement, BNP and its affiliate leaders allegedly attacked Chhatra Shibir members at the mosque, later locking them inside. The confrontation, which involved throwing bricks and stones, left 25 activists injured.
Among the seriously injured were Tanvir Siam, office secretary of Noakhali city Shibir; Naeem Hossain, law secretary; Sathi Salauddin; and Arafat Ali, president of Keramatia Madrasa’s Chhatra Shibir.
Local BNP leaders claimed that after Asr prayer, Shibir activists raised slogans and initiated political activities at the mosque, prompting BNP members to intervene, which escalated the clash.
Fifteen BNP leaders and affiliates, including union publicity secretary Md. Akhtar, office secretary Jahangir, and former union Chhatra Dal president Ziaur Rahman, were injured, with eight admitted to Noakhali General Hospital, which has a 250-bed capacity.
Sudharam police officer-in-charge Kamrul Islam said police arrived at the scene after receiving reports and that the situation is now under control.
