The BNP has announced an elaborate, month-long programme titled “Victory Torch Road Show in the Month of Victory” to celebrate the 55th Victory Day of Bangladesh.

The details were shared by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Saturday afternoon.

At the outset, Fakhrul extended greetings to the nation ahead of Victory Day, noting that this year’s celebration carries a special significance as the country “became free from fascism” in 2024 after years of political repression.

He said the BNP aims to make this year’s observance more colourful, meaningful and participatory through a series of programmes across the country.

According to the announcement, the Road Show will begin on 1 December from the historic Kalurghat Radio Station in Chattogram—where Major Ziaur Rahman first declared independence on behalf of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in March 1971.

The torch procession will travel from Kalurghat to Chattogram’s Biplob Uddyan on the same day, led by a noted freedom fighter from 1971 and a “July warrior” from the 2024 anti-fascism movement.

Over the following two weeks, the torch road show will move through all major divisions, including Cumilla, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Bogura, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Faridpur.

In each division, a freedom fighter and a July movement participant will carry the torch.

The programme will include visits to historic liberation war sites, cultural performances, patriotic songs, documentary screenings, and the broadcasting of selected speeches by Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.

The BNP will also highlight its 31-point vision for a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.

The theme song for the campaign is “Bangladesh First.”

The nationwide road show will conclude on 16 December, when the Victory Torch arrives in Dhaka.

A grand rally will be held at Manik Mia Avenue to mark the completion of the programme.

Multiple other events will continue throughout Victory Month alongside the road show.

Fakhrul reminded that countless people have sacrificed their lives since 1971 in the struggles for independence, anti-imperialism, democracy and, most recently, against authoritarianism.

He said this year’s Victory Day should reaffirm the commitment to realising the dreams of the martyrs.

The BNP leader added that the upcoming national election, expected in February, offers the nation an opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh according to those ideals.

He expressed hope that the media would help convey the BNP’s initiatives to the public and thanked journalists for attending the briefing.
