BNP activists, who support party chairperson’s adviser Aslam Chowdhury, blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Sitakunda on Monday evening, protesting his exclusion from the party’s preliminary list of candidates for the February general elections.
Activists of BNP and its affiliated organization Swechhasebak Dal blocked the highway at Bhatiari, Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram around 7pm, said Abdullah Momin, officer-in-charge of Baraiyar Hat Highway Police Station.
The police are trying to mitigate the chaos and huge traffic gridlock caused by the blockade, he said.
A few hours earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the list of potential party candidates for 237 parliamentary seats.
In the list, Kazi Salauuddin has been named as the candidate for the Chattogram-4 constituency (Sitakunda upazila), instead of aspirant Aslam Chowdhury.
