BNP is happy with the government’s decision to ban the organizational activities of the Awami League, said the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “We are happy that, albeit belatedly, the interim government has decided last night to ban the activities of the fascist party Awami League and all its affiliated organisations in the interest of speeding up the trial of those associated with the fascist government for crimes against humanity and ensuring smooth trial.”
“We consider the decision to try the fascist party by amending the relevant law to be correct,” he added.
However, the BNP Secretary General said that if this decision had been taken earlier in line with BNP’s demands, the government would not have had to face the embarrassing and undesirable situation of taking action under pressure.
In a statement, Mirza Fakhrul mentioned that in their written letters to the chief adviser on February 10 and April 16, BNP had demanded ‘to bring the Awami League to justice as a political party for genocide and crimes against humanity’ and “to quickly bring to justice those associated with the fascist party and the government of that party and clear the political arena of the country of filth.”
In this context, he further said, “We had clearly said in the discussion that it is possible and should be possible to ban the fascist party Awami League through the legal process. We have repeatedly raised these demands in various meetings, rallies and discussions.”
The statement said that BNP, referring to the banning of political parties by administrative orders, said that this is why BNP protested the government’s decision to ban Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami just before the fall of the previous fascist government.
Reiterating his demand for early elections in the statement, Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, “For 16 long years, the people have been fighting for their right to vote and the restoration of democracy, despite enduring disappearances, murders, imprisonment and oppression, to overthrow fascism. Their demand has not been achieved yet.”
The BNP Secretary General has called on the interim government to be aware of the anger that is being created in the public mind due to the lack of a specific roadmap to the elections.
