Joint forces have arrested expelled BNP leader Asaduzzaman Jony from Abhoynagar upazila of Jashore on charges of abducting a businessman, burying him up to his chest in sand, and extorting 4 crore BDT.
The arrest took place early Thursday (14 August) during a raid at a residential hotel named Rose Garden-2 in Khulna. His associate, former UP member of ward no. 5 under Chhalishia Union, Tuhin, was also arrested.
Jony, son of Kamruzzaman Mojumder from Goruhata area of Naoapara Bazar, was the organizing secretary of Naoapara Municipality BNP. His party post was suspended on November 21, 2024, over allegations of breaching party discipline. His associate Tuhin is the son of Mahmud Sheikh from Kota village in Chhalishia Union of Abhoynagar.
According to Abhoynagar Police OC Abdul Alim, Jony had been absconding for a long time. In July last year, Asma Khatun, wife of Naoapara businessman Shahnewaz Kabir Tipu, alleged that her husband was held at gunpoint, buried in sand up to his chest, and 4 Crore BDT was extorted from him in several phases. She also said her husband was threatened with death if he failed to pay. Based on the complaint, Jony and several others were accused. A case was filed on August 3 this year against six individuals.
The case statement reveals that on September 2 last year at around 10:00 am, one Saikat Hossain Hira lured Tipu, owner of Zafridi Enterprise in Naoapara, to Jony’s office. There, Jony allegedly beat him and held him at gunpoint, demanding 2 Crore BDT. The money was then transferred to Jony’s company account at South Bangla Bank through the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system. After receiving the payment, they released Tipu the same day.
However, on September 18 at around 9:00 am, while Tipu was riding his motorcycle to the market from his home in Chhalishia, Hira stopped him near a hospital gate. His phone remained switched off until 3:00 pm. Later, the family learned that he had been taken to Jony’s “Kana Eco Park.”
According to the complaint, the victim’s family found Jony, Samrat Hossain, and Mofiz Uddin—current general secretary of the Naoapara Press Club—beating Tipu at gunpoint and burying him in a pit up to his chest in sand. They then demanded another 2 Crore BDT. Under pressure, Tipu called his manager to arrange the payment. Subsequently, 68 Lacs BDT was sent from Pubali Bank and 32 Lacs BDT from South Bangla Bank under Mofiz Enterprise.
Mofiz also allegedly obtained a cheque worth 1 Crore BDT and took signatures on six blank Tk 100 stamps—three purchased in Jony’s name and three in Dilip Saha’s name. The victim was threatened with death if he disclosed the matter to anyone.
OC Abdul Alim confirmed that Jony was arrested in Khulna over the Tk 40 million extortion charges and that legal proceedings are underway.
