At least six to seven people were reportedly injured in an attack on a BNP membership renewal and recruitment programme in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, where portraits of party founder Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, Chairperson Khaleda Zia, and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman were vandalised and trampled.

The incident occurred around 5:00pm on Saturday (5 July) at Peyarpur Bazar in Kobai Union of the upazila. Although BNP central Joint Organising Secretary and former Barishal district general secretary Advocate Nazrul Islam Khan Rajon was scheduled to attend the programme as chief guest, the attack took place before his arrival.

According to local BNP leaders, the event was presided over by former Kobai Union BNP president Abdul Kuddus Mia. As the meeting began, a group allegedly led by Rigaan — including Montu Gazi (union BNP member secretary), Hasan (Jubo Dal), and Bappi (Chhatra Dal), along with over a hundred activists — launched the attack. The attackers are claimed to be supporters of district BNP convener and former MP Abul Hossain Khan.

In the attack, Abdul Kuddus Mia (62), veteran BNP supporter Joydar Hawladar (70), and activist Sumon Akon (50) were among those injured.

Later, around 5:30pm, BNP activists led by Advocate Nazrul Islam Khan Rajon brought out an anti-terror protest march through the streets of Peyarpur Bazar. The programme concluded with a motorcycle showdown, followed by a visit to Bakerganj Police Station, where they demanded action against the attackers in a meeting with Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad.

OC Azad confirmed that BNP leaders had verbally informed police of the incident. “Necessary legal action will be taken upon receipt of a written complaint,” he said.

District BNP Convener Abul Hossain Khan declined to comment on the matter.
