The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will sit for a second round of discussions with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Monday, as part of the ongoing reform dialogue process initiated by the interim government.
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed the meeting while addressing a discussion event in Dhaka on Saturday. The event, held to commemorate the 44th death anniversary of party founder Ziaur Rahman, focused on current political developments and the reform agenda.
Salahuddin acknowledged the continuation of formal dialogue between the interim government and political parties but questioned its effectiveness. “Talks are being held, but no real outcomes are visible. To restore public trust, symbolic gestures won’t suffice—practical steps are needed,” he said.
He expressed concern over the unilateral approach allegedly taken by the newly formed Constitution Reform Commission. “Reforms must reflect national consensus. Imposing changes by force is not democracy—it resembles a return to one-party rule,” Salahuddin warned, referring to the historical BAKSAL system.
Reiterating the BNP’s core stance, he called for elections to be held under a neutral administration and dismissed any justification for delaying the national polls beyond December. “If the government has a valid reason for holding elections after December, it should present it publicly,” he asserted.
The upcoming meeting is expected to cover key issues such as election schedules, the structure of governance, and proposed constitutional amendments. BNP insiders say they will push for transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in the reform process.
The dialogue initiative, led by Chief Adviser Yunus, aims to ease political tensions and lay the groundwork for credible national elections. However, opposition leaders continue to voice skepticism about the government’s sincerity and commitment to meaningful reform.
