The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reiterated its demand for a non-partisan caretaker government limited to 90 days, exclusively to oversee the upcoming national election.

Speaking to the media during a break in the National Consensus Commission talks on Tuesday, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said the party does not support local government elections being held under a caretaker regime.

“We are in favor of conducting only the national election under a caretaker system. BNP does not support the idea of holding local government elections under such a government,” Salahuddin stated at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

He also rejected the commission’s suggestion of a four-month caretaker tenure. “We believe a three-month timeframe is sufficient and appropriate,” he added.

Addressing constitutional reform, Salahuddin proposed amending Article 70 to allow Members of Parliament to vote independently on key issues, excluding the finance bill, no-confidence motions, constitutional changes, and national security matters.

“If the country faces a war or a security crisis, MPs should be allowed cross-party voting. This flexibility must be added to Article 70,” he emphasized.

Salahuddin also dismissed the idea of all parliamentary standing committees being chaired by opposition lawmakers, stating, “Some can be led by the opposition, but making it universal is unrealistic.”

Tuesday’s session was chaired by Commission Chairman Prof Ali Riaz and included representatives from nearly 30 political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).

The second round of talks, inaugurated Monday by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, aims to forge a national consensus on key electoral and constitutional reforms.
