An explosive device was hurled at Sheikh Abul Bashar, convener of Khulna’s Phultala Upazila BNP and chairman of Phultala Union Parishad, on Thursday night. The bomb missed its target, resulting in no injuries.

The attack took place around 8:30 PM near the Chauddhomile area on the Khulna-Jashore highway, as Bashar stood near the Super Jute Mill. Eyewitnesses and police sources said unidentified assailants threw a handmade bomb at him, which detonated on the road without causing any harm.

Following the incident, BNP activists set fire to tires in protest at Phultala Bazar and organized a demonstration. During the protest, local and district BNP leaders, including Md. Moniruzzaman Montu, Monir Hasan Tito, Molla Monirul Islam, and others, addressed a gathering demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers.

BNP’s central and local units issued a joint statement strongly condemning the attack. They accused the “remnants of the fallen regime” of orchestrating violence to destabilize the Khulna region.

The statement was signed by several prominent BNP leaders, including Rokibul Islam Bakul, Azizul Bari Helal, Shafiqul Alam Mona, Moniruzzaman Montu, and others.

Phultala Police Station OC, Md. Moniruzzaman confirmed the incident to Liberty News’ local correspondent, stating that Bashar was en route to his home in Bejerdanga when the bomb was thrown near Super Bricks. Police are investigating the matter and have launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators.
