UK Health Minister Andrew Gwynne has been dismissed over allegations of sending inappropriate messages on WhatsApp. On Saturday (February 8), the country’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, made the announcement. The minister was also expelled from the Labour Party.
Andrew Gwynne was dismissed from his position after a newspaper report revealed that he had sent offensive and insulting WhatsApp messages. Following a report in the Mail on Sunday, the Member of Parliament for Gorton and Denton was also expelled from the Labour Party.
The messages sent on WhatsApp allegedly insulted voters, fellow MPs, and councillors.
A UK government spokesperson stated, “Prime Minister Keir Starmer is committed to maintaining high standards for those in public office, and any minister who fails to meet these standards will not hesitate to face action.”
On the other hand, in a post on the social media platform X, Andrew Gwynne expressed regret, saying he was “deeply sorry” for any offense caused by his “extremely poor judgment” in making the comments.
He also mentioned that he understood the decisions of the Prime Minister and the Labour Party, and although being dismissed was “very unfortunate,” he would continue to support them in any way possible.
A spokesperson for the Labour Party stated that Gwynne had been “administratively expelled” from the party.
The spokesperson further explained, “In accordance with the Labour Party’s rules and procedures, the decision was made after investigating the comments made in the WhatsApp group.”
