Lakshmipur correspondent: A mobile court in Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur has sentenced a land office broker to two days in jail for defrauding a land service seeker.

The convicted individual, Harunur Rashid (48), was detained in front of the Kamalnagar Land Office on Wednesday afternoon following a complaint lodged by a victim. The sentence was delivered on the spot by Kamalnagar Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Arafat Hossain.

Harun, a deed writer by profession, hails from Char Jangalia area and is the son of Hasanuzzaman.

According to land office sources, Harun had been collecting large sums of money from individuals under the pretext of completing land registration (namjari) procedures. Victims alleged that he often cited various documentation complications to delay the process, sometimes for months, without delivering the promised services.

One such victim filed a complaint with the AC Land, which upon investigation was found to be credible. The mobile court subsequently sentenced Harun to two days of simple imprisonment.

“We caught Harun red-handed after a complaint that he had taken a hefty sum promising to complete a land registration,” said Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Arafat Hossain. “He was sentenced to two days in jail under summary trial provisions.”
