BSEC on strike, chairman and commissioner absent

The Bangladesh Securities & Exchange Commission (BSEC), the capital market regulator, is currently observing a strike. Although officers and staff arrived at the office at the scheduled time this morning, none of them have resumed work. They have stated that the strike will continue until BSEC Chairman Khondkar Rashed Maksud resigns.

Meanwhile, neither the Chairman nor any commission members have come to the office, resulting in a sort of shutdown situation. Around 20 to 25 investors have gathered in front of the BSEC office, protesting and demanding the Chairman’s resignation. To avoid any untoward incidents, police personnel have been deployed.

Yesterday, Wednesday afternoon, employees trapped the Chairman and Commissioners for nearly four hours in the Agargaon building. This protest was against the forced retirement of the organization’s Executive Director, Saifur Rahman, the employees are calling for Chairman Khondkar Rashed Maksud’s resignation. Later, in a press conference, the Executive Director Mahbubul Alam announced the strike on behalf of the organization’s officers staff.

It was announced at the press conference that if the commission does not resign by Wednesday, all categories of officers staff at the BSEC will observe a strike starting from Thursday. Present at the conference were BSEC’s Executive Directors Anwarul Islam, Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, along with officials and employees from various levels.

Earlier, on Wednesday at 3:30 PM, under the watch of law enforcement officers, BSEC Chairman Khondkar Rashed Maksud, other commissioners were freed from being trapped in the building and left the BSEC premises. During this time, the protesting officers, employees chanted slogans demanding their resignation.
