A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the Moulvibazar border late Saturday night, with the body reportedly taken into Indian territory, triggering diplomatic concerns.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on May 31 in the no-man’s land near Dattagram border under Sharifpur union of Kulaura upazila. The victim was identified as Pradip Baidya, son of Shailendra Baidya, and a resident of Dattagram village. He was engaged in agriculture while continuing his education.
Local Union Parishad member of Ward 9, Zaynul Islam, confirmed the incident and said Pradip’s body is currently at Kailashahar Hospital in India. “He was shot near the barbed wire fence by BSF personnel. They took his body immediately. Although we attempted to intervene, it was not possible during the night,” Zaynul added.
He also stated that he, along with Pradip’s family, was at Kulaura Police Station to file a general diary (GD) regarding the shooting. Following the GD, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is expected to initiate official procedures.
Lieutenant Colonel ASM Zakaria, Commanding Officer of the 46 BGB Battalion, confirmed that the shooting took place inside Indian territory. “The body has been taken to Kailashahar Hospital, and Indian authorities will return the body through proper diplomatic and legal channels,” he said.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over border killings and the need for renewed cooperation between the two countries to prevent such tragedies.
