Data download speed on 4G mobile internet is set to be minimum 10 megabytes per second (mbps) while upload speed will be 2-mbps starting next month, according to new guidelines approved by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) last week.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the chief adviser’s special assistant on ICT, confirmed the development in a facebook post on Sunday.
BTRC would inspect if the mobile operators and relevant private sector organisations ensuring the speed every month, Taiyeb added.
The network improvement requirements have been incorporated under a new Quality of Service (QoS) framework aimed at telecom companies, NTTN operators, and ISP companies, he noted.
The QoS sets advanced service thresholds for private network operators to meet.
As per the new requirements, browsing and streaming speed at the network-level has to be 3.5-mbps and at district- as well as upazila-levels 2.5mbps.
Network-level call setup success rate has to be 99%, and at district- and upazila-levels it has to be 98%. Call drop rate cannot be more than 1% on 2G networks and cannot cross the 1%-5% range at the upazila level.
