With private TV networks showing little interest, state-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) will air the upcoming Bangladesh-Zimbabwe Test series, starting April 21, as no commercial broadcaster bid for the rights

In a surprising turn, no private television channels have stepped forward to purchase the broadcast rights for the Bangladesh-Zimbabwe Test series, compelling the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to hand over the responsibility to BTV.

According to a BTV press release issued Thursday, both Test matches will be aired live using the BCB’s designated production satellite feed. The first match begins on April 21 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, while the second Test is scheduled for April 28 at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman Stadium in Khulna.

The BCB had invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from media organizations on March 19, setting April 7 as the deadline. However, no network submitted a proposal by the closing date, citing a lack of public enthusiasm surrounding the series and concerns over viewership-driven losses.

Traditionally, networks such as T Sports and GTV have held the domestic broadcast rights under the Millennium Media Consortium. This time, however, the expected engagement failed to materialize.

Industry insiders suggest that the relatively low fan excitement for the Zimbabwe series made it a less attractive option for commercial broadcasters. Despite the disappointment among cricket enthusiasts, BTV’s involvement ensures fans will still be able to follow the matches live on television.
