Businessman shot, BDT 22 lacs robbed in Mirpur

Armed assailants shot and robbed a money exchange businessman of BDT 22 lacs in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Tuesday morning, leaving him critically injured.

In a daring daylight robbery, six unidentified assailants on two motorbikes intercepted businessman Md. Mahmudul Islam, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, and snatched BDT 22 lacs after shooting him near Abdul Baten Road in Mirpur. The incident occurred around 10:00 AM, as Mahmudul was on his way to his office in Mirpur 10. Mahmudul, 55, was shot in the left side of his waist and is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. He initially received first aid at a nearby hospital before being transferred for advanced care. Witnesses said the attack took place between the Swimming Pool and Fire Service Office near the stadium. The robbers demanded money before opening fire and fleeing with the cash. Locals rushed to the victim’s aid and alerted authorities. Mahmudul, a resident of Lane 4, Section 6 in Mirpur, hails from Kartar village in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district. Confirming the incident, Mohammad Sajjadur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, said law enforcement, including police, army, and RAB, quickly arrived at the scene. “We are working to identify and arrest those involved. The victim’s family confirmed that BDT 22 lacs was taken,” he added. A case is expected to be filed soon as the investigation continues.
