CA departs for Japan on 4-day visit

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has embarked on a four-day official visit to Japan.

According to the Chief Adviser’s Office, his flight departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport shortly after 2:15 AM on Tuesday night. He is flying to Tokyo via Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific Airways flight.

As per reports, Professor Yunus is scheduled to arrive at Narita International Airport in Tokyo at 2:30 PM local time on Wednesday.

During the visit, Professor Yunus will attend the 30th Nikkei Forum and hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during the visit, covering cooperation in investment, energy, and technology sectors. Discussions may also include budgetary support and an exchange of notes regarding the upgrade of the Joydebpur-Ishwardi railway to a dual-gauge double-track system.

Upon arrival in Tokyo, the Chief Adviser is scheduled to meet with Taro Aso, President of the Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League, at 5 PM on Wednesday. Later in the evening, he will attend a dinner hosted by Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation, followed by an informal exchange with prominent Japanese figures.

On Thursday, prior to the Nikkei Forum, senior executives of Nikkei Inc. will pay a courtesy call on Professor Yunus. He will then deliver the keynote address at the forum’s opening session, speaking on the theme, “Asia’s Challenges in a Turbulent World.”

The forum will be attended by leaders including the Presidents of Laos and Palau, the Prime Ministers of Japan and Cambodia, Deputy Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Singapore, as well as ministers, policy experts, academics, and representatives from international organizations.

Later that day, Professor Yunus will participate in a seminar on human resource development organized by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo. He will highlight Bangladesh’s growing potential to meet Japan’s demand for skilled labor. He is also expected to meet with key Japanese stakeholders, including Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, to review ongoing development cooperation and projects funded by the agency.

During the visit, Professor Yunus will give interviews to leading Japanese media outlets, including Nikkei, NHK, Asahi Shimbun, Asahi TV, and Nippon TV.

On the evening of May 29, he will attend a gala dinner hosted by the Nikkei Forum in honor of distinguished speakers.

On Friday morning, Professor Yunus will meet Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo. A red carpet reception and guard of honor will precede the bilateral meeting. The two leaders will discuss a wide range of strategic issues, including trade and investment, infrastructure development, agricultural cooperation, human resource development, and the Rohingya crisis.

Later that day, he will meet Kimura Fukunari, President of JETRO, to explore opportunities for boosting bilateral trade and investment. He will also join a roundtable with Japanese investors and attend the Bangladesh Business Seminar, where he will engage with global CEOs, members of the social business community, and young professionals from both countries.

In recognition of his contributions to social innovation and global development, Soka University will confer an honorary doctorate on Professor Yunus in the afternoon. He is expected to deliver an address at the award ceremony.

In the evening, he will attend a community reception hosted by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo, where he will meet with members of the Bangladeshi diaspora. Later, he will join a dinner hosted by the Bangladeshi Ambassador at Bangladesh House.

Professor Yunus is scheduled to depart Tokyo on Saturday morning aboard a Singapore Airlines flight, returning to Dhaka via Singapore later that night.
