After 33 years, Jahangirnagar University (JU) is set to hold voting for its Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and Hall Union elections on Thursday, with polls open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The last JUCSU election was held in 1992.

According to the final candidate list, 179 candidates are contesting for 25 posts. The list, published on the JUCSU website, shows 10 candidates for the Vice President (VP) position and nine for the General Secretary (GS) post. However, one independent candidate has withdrawn, leaving eight candidates for the GS position.

JU has a total of 11,919 registered voters across its 21 residential halls, with 6,102 male and 5,817 female voters. Nearly half of the voters are women, prompting candidates to emphasise women’s empowerment and promises to build a women-friendly campus in their manifestos.

Campaigning ran for 12 consecutive days until Tuesday, with candidates actively engaging students in academic areas, TSC, Murad Chowrangi, Tarzan Point, and central library grounds during the day, and in residential halls at night. Candidates discussed student concerns and outlined their commitments to the campus community.

During campaigning, student leader Sheikh Saadi Hasan, VP candidate from the Chhatra Dal-backed panel, told reporters, “We have received an overwhelming response from students from day one. We are confident of a historic win in tomorrow’s polls with the support of general students.”
