Expressing its reluctance to accept the draft of the July Charter, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has said that though the National Consensus Commission earlier spoke of six decision-making methods, it released the draft charter suddenly without holding any discussion on those issues.
“The party believes this is not a proper approach. We strongly oppose this. Although there was no consultation on the procedures of decision-making, they [the Consensus Commission] published the draft. We cannot accept it,” NCP Joint Convener Javed Rasin said on Tuesday.
He was speaking to the media during the lunch break of the 21st session of the second phase reform dialogue between the Commission and the political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Rasin said, “We have made it clear that the issues on which consensus has been reached must be legally established before the next parliamentary election, and based on that, the election must be held.”
The National Consensus Commission has prepared the draft “July National Charter 2025”, which emphasises that the political parties must implement the governance system reforms within two years of the formation of the next elected parliament.
The Commission released the draft on Monday. It has already been sent to political parties.
