Can’t confirm national election date yet : CEC

Liberty News Desk

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said on Saturday (15 June) that the Election Commission is not yet in a position to confirm a date for the next national election.

Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, the CEC said, “I cannot say the election will be on ‘such and such’ day,” adding that the commission is prepared to hold the election as soon as it receives a clear signal from the government.

“We are ready. Many of the preparations for conducting the election are already in place,” he stated.

The CEC clarified that while a joint statement had been received, it lacked any signatures, making it unofficial. He reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring a fair and neutral electoral process, describing the EC’s role as that of a referee to guarantee a level playing field.

The remarks came during a post-Eid meeting with senior EC officials, including election commissioners and the secretary.
