Captain Gazi murder : Main accused arrested after 19 years

Captain Gazi was a valiant officer of 24 East Bengal Regiment.

In a major development in the murder case of Captain Nurul Alam Gazi, who was killed 18 years ago in Naniarchar, Rangamati, the prime accused, Nikil Nath (58), has been arrested. He was apprehended on Tuesday, February 11, from the Naniarchar Hospital area by the Naniarchar police station, under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nazir Alam.

The murder case, which has drawn nationwide attention, involved nine members of the regional organization, United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) of the hills. This marks the first arrest of a suspect in the case in over a decade and a half.

On December 27, 2006, at around 6 PM, a group of armed hill militants attacked a military patrol in the area, leading to the death of Captain Nurul Alam Gazi, who was shot during the assault.

Following the incident, Sergeant Md. Shahidul Islam from the 24th Bengal Regiment, Naniarchar Zone, filed a murder case with Naniarchar police, naming nine suspects. The case number was 01, dated December 27, 2006, under sections 302/34 of the Penal Code.

The incident occurred at Jurachhari Hill, located in the Maischhari area of the Ghillaichhari Union in Naniarchar Upazila. The armed assailants specifically targeted the military patrol team in this attack. The location is approximately 22 kilometers southwest of the upazila headquarters.

In the murder case, the primary accused is Nikil Nath (58), the son of Monindranath from the Upper Bazaar area of Naniarchar. Since the case was filed, Nikil Nath went into hiding, and for over 15 years, the police were unable to arrest him.

However, there has been no statement from the leaders of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) of Prasit Khisar regarding the case or the arrests of the nine members involved in the murder of Army Captain Gazi.

Naniarchar Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nazir Alam told Liberty News, “Nikil Nath, who was arrested, is the primary accused in the high-profile murder case of Army Captain Nurul Alam Gazi. A court had issued an arrest warrant against him, and it was after 18 years that he was finally apprehended based on that warrant. The accused has been sent to court. Nine members of the regional organization, UPDF, have been named as accused in this murder case, and we are making the utmost effort to arrest the other accused.”
