Cargo vessel sinks in Meghna amid rough weather triggered by Bay

A cargo vessel named MV frahim sank in the Meghna River near Noakhali’s Hatia upazila on Thursday afternoon due to adverse weather caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

The incident occurred southeast of Bhumiheen Bazaar near Char Mohiuddin Market under Chandan union. No casualties or missing persons were reported, according to Hatia police.

Businessman Mohammad Nazmul Alam from Tamraddi Bazaar stated that MV Prahim departed from Chittagong in the morning, carrying rods, cement, and grocery goods en route to Hatia via Sandwip. Despite stormy conditions, the vessel allegedly operated without adhering to safety protocols, and passengers were reportedly overcharged.

As the vessel approached Char Mohiuddin Market, it encountered powerful winds and capsized, submerging 28 tons of rods, cement, and goods worth nearly Tk 4 lakh into the river.

Local fishermen responded swiftly, rescuing the crew on board.

The vessel’s owner, Jahid, and associate Sunil Member were unavailable for comment.

Officer-in-Charge of Hatia Police Station, AKM Azmal Huda, confirmed that a businessman had lodged a General Diary (GD) regarding the incident. Police are investigating and have pledged to take necessary legal action.
