Even 21 hours after the fire that ravaged the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, smoke was still seen billowing from the debris.

As of 11:00 am on Sunday, smoke continued to rise from the destroyed buildings, while fire service personnel kept spraying water over the ruins.

Lima Khanam, duty officer at the Fire Service control room, said, “The fire has not been completely extinguished yet, which is why smoke is still coming out. Our 22 units are working continuously to put it out. We’re spraying water nonstop to prevent the fire from flaring up again.”

Since morning, victims and curious onlookers have been gathering near the cargo village to witness the devastation. However, law enforcement officers have been preventing anyone from entering the restricted area.

Rezaul Karim Rony, an employee of a C&F (Clearing and Forwarding) agency, said: “Imports remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays, but exports are always open. So I came here Saturday morning to export goods. We had already deposited money on Thursday, but couldn’t collect the shipment. It was scheduled for Sunday. Before that could happen, everything was burned to ashes.”

He added: “This fire will have a major impact on the country’s garment factories, since most of the goods stored here were related to the apparel industry. It’s unusual for such a massive fire to occur on a Saturday or holiday. The losses could reach several thousand crore taka.”

Earlier, on Saturday around 2:15 pm, a fire broke out at the airport’s cargo village.
A total of 37 fire service units worked to bring the blaze under control, assisted by personnel from the Navy, Air Force, Civil Aviation Authority, Border Guard Bangladesh (two platoons), police, and Ansar.
