Bangladesh faces a decisive economic period over the next seven months, with the interim government unveiling an ambitious plan to boost Chattogram Port’s capacity sixfold, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam.
In a verified Facebook post, Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam emphasized that the interim government led by Professor Yunus is aware of the strategic importance of the coming months. He revealed a bold plan to expand Chattogram Port’s capacity to 7.86 million TEUs, which he described as a transformative step for the nation’s trade infrastructure.
Alam noted that such expansion is unattainable without partnerships with leading global port operators. “If successful, it will send a strong message to international investors and businesses — Bangladesh is open for business,” he wrote. “These next seven months could either make or break the nation.”
Reflecting on global economic trends, Alam referenced major international publications, stating that the post-Bretton Woods trade order, once institutionalized through the WTO, is now unraveling. He identified East Asian export-driven economies such as Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam as the past winners of that system.
He added that while Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines have gradually advanced on that path, South Asia lagged behind. “Perhaps, finally, it’s Bangladesh’s turn,” Alam suggested, questioning whether the country can seize this opportunity.
Highlighting political dynamics, he remarked that even Islamist groups are beginning to recognize the importance of being business-friendly. However, he warned that logistical challenges remain the biggest hurdle to economic advancement.
