Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has announced that if the national election is to be held in December, the schedule must be declared in October.

Speaking to reporters on Monday after a meeting with British High Commissioner Sarah Cook at the Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Dhaka, the CEC confirmed this timeline. The meeting lasted for about an hour.

“There is a set timeline—early December. Keeping that in mind, we are making necessary preparations. Since the election is in December, the schedule must be announced in October. We have informed the High Commissioner that we are ensuring we don’t miss this timeline,” said Nasir Uddin.

He added that the British High Commission inquired about the kind of assistance Bangladesh’s EC might need for the upcoming election.

On the discussion topics, the CEC said, “They wanted to know about our preparations and expressed their willingness to support Bangladesh’s democratic journey. We discussed election observers, voter lists, party registration, and procurement matters.”

When asked whether local government elections were discussed, he clarified that the meeting did not cover that topic.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that regarding the registration of new political parties, the CEC remarked, “The Chief Adviser has already announced it. He has sounded the whistle that the election will be held in December or January.”
