Cole Palmer led Chelsea to a stunning 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday, as the English side lifted the inaugural title at the MetLife Stadium.
Palmer scored twice and assisted another in the first half to shock the Champions League winners, who were favourites going into the match after thrashing Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-final.
The game, watched by former US President Donald Trump, saw Chelsea take control early. Palmer opened the scoring midway through the first half, doubled the lead on the half-hour mark, and then set up Joao Pedro for a third just before half-time.
PSG’s night went from bad to worse when Joao Neves was sent off in the 86th minute after a VAR review showed he pulled Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella by the hair off the ball.
Chelsea, who also won the UEFA Conference League and finished fourth in the Premier League this season, became the first-ever winners of FIFA’s new 32-team Club World Cup. They will also earn around $125 million in prize money.
Despite a historic domestic and European campaign, PSG will be disappointed to miss out on the global crown. Luis Enrique’s team now look ahead to the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur next month.
