At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in a massive explosion at a chemical factory in Sangareddy district of Telangana, India, on Monday, according to local authorities.

“We have recovered 12 bodies so far,” confirmed B Nageshwara Rao, the district fire officer overseeing the rescue operation. “We are searching through the debris for more bodies.”

The blast ripped through the factory building, turning large sections into rubble. Television footage showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, while rescue workers combed the wreckage for survivors.

Industrial accidents are frequent in India, often attributed to poor infrastructure, inadequate safety planning, and lax enforcement of regulations.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow, stating that the “death of several people has caused great distress.”

State Labour Minister Vivek Venkataswamy said the injured are receiving treatment, including some who had been trapped under debris for hours. He confirmed that the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
