Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus is set to embark on a four-day official visit to Japan late Tuesday, with Tokyo likely to announce a $1 billion budget support package for Bangladesh during the trip.
Chief Adviser to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, will leave Dhaka for Tokyo tonight as part of a four-day diplomatic mission aimed at deepening economic ties with Japan. The visit is expected to result in several key agreements, including a potential $1 billion budget support announcement from the Japanese government.
During his stay in Tokyo, Dr. Yunus will meet Japan’s Foreign Minister, the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the head of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). He is also scheduled to participate in a business seminar where he will urge Japanese investors to increase investments in Bangladesh.
According to government officials, Dr. Yunus will attend the Nikkei Forum on May 29, followed by a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on May 30.
In a press briefing on Monday, Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddiqui disclosed that seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during the visit. These include a loan agreement with JBIC for prepaid gas meters, land agreements for two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) with Onda and Naxess, and a deal with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) for establishing battery and bicycle manufacturing plants.
Additionally, MoUs with JICA for setting up OSS technology at BIDA and with BMET on skill and language development are anticipated. The exchange of notes on budget support and the upgrade of the Joydebpur–Ishwardi railway to a dual-gauge double track is also on the agenda.
Dr. Yunus’s visit comes at a critical time as Bangladesh seeks to bolster foreign investment and secure financial support amid ongoing economic reforms.
