Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the first-ever Civil Surgeon Conference on Monday, marking a significant step toward improving public health services across the country.

Modeled after the annual Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference, the two-day Civil Surgeon Conference began with a formal opening ceremony at the Office of the Chief Adviser. The event was attended by civil surgeons from all 64 districts, members of the Advisery Council, the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistants, secretaries and senior officials from various ministries, as well as representatives of foreign embassies and development partners.

Professor Dr. Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Health Affairs, told the Liberty News that the working sessions of the conference would be held at the Shahid Abu Sayed International Convention Center near Hotel InterContinental. These sessions will feature insights and directives from advisors, secretaries, and senior officials of health and related ministries.

The Ministry of Health noted that, similar to the DC Conference, this initiative aims to gather firsthand recommendations from district-level health officials. In preparation for the event, civil surgeons submitted their observations and suggestions regarding local healthcare challenges.

Issues raised include the health sector’s role in preventing child marriage, strengthening rural healthcare, expanding immunization coverage, addressing manpower and infrastructure shortages, increasing budget allocations, adding more hospital beds, solving ambulance and transport issues, and combating the ongoing shortage of doctors.

Health officials hope the recommendations from the grassroots level will contribute to substantial reforms and stronger coordination in Bangladesh’s healthcare system.
