Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has called on journalists to maintain objectivity and exercise heightened responsibility when covering issues related to law, justice, and the constitution.

“Reporting on these subjects is inherently complex and demands diligence. Journalists should be especially careful in verifying facts before publication,” he said.

The Chief Justice made the remarks on Wednesday at the unveiling of Jagoron, the annual publication of the Supreme Court Reporters’ Forum (SRF), a group of journalists covering the apex court.

Established after its first annual general meeting on 21 June, the SRF has already formed its executive committee.

Reflecting on his nearly one-year tenure, Chief Justice Ahmed noted that while media coverage of the judiciary has largely maintained objectivity, some reports lacked depth. He urged reporters to remain vigilant and strive for more comprehensive coverage.

He commended Supreme Court reporters for their regular courtroom attendance, attention to detail, and prompt reporting. “The role of journalists is vital to building an independent judiciary,” he added.

The Chief Justice also stressed the need to uphold the dignity of the judiciary and expressed hope for stronger professional ties between the media and the judicial system.

SRF president and Channel 24 senior correspondent Masudur Rahman praised the Chief Justice’s reform initiatives and roadmap to strengthen judicial independence. He voiced optimism about the formation of a separate judicial secretariat as promised by the Chief Justice.

Earlier, SRF members presented the Chief Justice with a bouquet to mark the occasion.
