A four-year-old girl named Khadija died and her seven-year-old brother sustained injuries after a bomb exploded inside their home in a slum near Shankarpur in Jashore on Saturday morning.
Khadija succumbed to her injuries on the way to Dhaka for advanced treatment, confirmed her stepfather Shahadat Gazi. “Doctors advised us to take her to Dhaka. But she died in the ambulance near Muksudpur, Gopalganj,” he told reporters around 12:30 PM.
The tragic incident occurred around 8 AM near the Golpata Mosque area in the residence of late BNP leader Nur-un-Nabi. The siblings were critically injured when a bomb exploded inside their room. Locals and family members rushed them to Jashore General Hospital, where doctors described Khadija’s condition as critical.
Dr. Shakirul Islam at the hospital said Khadija suffered injuries to her hands and chest, while her brother Sajib was also wounded in several parts of his body.
Police suspect the bomb may have accidentally detonated from a nearby room allegedly used by local criminal Musa, alias Sagor, known for making homemade explosives. His mother lives adjacent to the children’s room.
Their grandmother Monowara Begum said she was eating with her daughter-in-law when they heard a loud bang and saw smoke. Rushing inside, she found her grandchildren lying injured in a pool of blood.
Police and army bomb disposal units visited the site, including Jashore Superintendent of Police Rownak Jahan. She said the nature of the bomb is still unclear and a specialized army team has been called in for examination. Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
