The Chinese government has approved a Tk244 crore budget for the construction of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Hall at Dhaka University, a landmark initiative aimed at easing the severe accommodation crisis faced by female students.
According to university sources, the hall will provide residential facilities for around 1,500 students once completed.
The project, to be built with Chinese financial assistance, marks the first student hall at DU to be constructed under Chinese funding.
A few months ago, the Economic Relations Division (ERD) sent an official proposal to the Chinese authorities through the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka to implement the project.
The proposal has now been formally approved by the Chinese government, and the university administration has confirmed that internal administrative procedures are currently underway.
ERD officials said that following the completion of the preliminary process, a Chinese expert team will visit Dhaka to conduct a feasibility study before final approval and implementation begin.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan welcomed the development, saying, “The construction of such a hall project with the support of the Chinese government will be an important addition to the university’s history. It will play a major role in resolving the housing crisis for female students. We are in regular contact with the Chinese Embassy so that the project progresses smoothly and quickly.”
The Bangladesh-China Friendship Hall is expected to become a symbol of growing educational cooperation and friendship between the two countries
