Beijing has no intention of establishing a military base in Bangladesh, Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen stated, rejecting recent claims made by a US defense intelligence report as unfounded and misleading.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Wednesday dismissed US allegations that China seeks to build military bases in several countries, including Bangladesh. Speaking at a public event in Dhaka, the ambassador called the claims “baseless” and emphasized that China values friendship over military expansion.
The statement comes in response to a report by the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) that assessed global threats. The report suggested that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is attempting to establish a network of military facilities in 16 countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Thailand, to extend its global military reach.
Ambassador Yao questioned the credibility of the U.S. report, saying, “None of the information is accurate. We have friendly relations with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar. We do not seek any military presence in these countries, nor do we have such plans.”
When asked about the report’s content and sources, Yao replied, “I do not know what evidence the United States is basing this claim on. It lacks both facts and transparency.”
Bangladesh’s Interim Government’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain, when approached for comment, said he had no knowledge of the US report and had not reviewed its contents.
The denial from China adds to growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, as both nations compete for influence in South and Southeast Asia. While the US continues to express concern over China’s growing strategic footprint, Chinese officials repeatedly stress that their investments and partnerships in the region are rooted in mutual development and cooperation, not military objectives.
