China has announced visa restrictions on several US officials in retaliation for Washington’s recent move targeting Chinese policies in Tibet.

Beijing on Monday declared a new round of visa bans on American officials, citing US sanctions imposed two weeks ago against Chinese authorities involved in restricting foreign access to Tibet. The announcement was made during a regular press briefing by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a report by Reuters.

The tit-for-tat measures mark a fresh escalation in tensions between the two superpowers, this time centering on the sensitive Himalayan region. Tibet, which shares borders with both China and India, has long been a geopolitical flashpoint. China has controlled the region since 1950, often facing international criticism for its human rights record there.

The latest US move was aimed at Chinese officials accused of limiting the ability of foreign diplomats, journalists, and tourists to freely enter Tibet. In response, China defended its policies, accusing the US of interference in its internal affairs.

Tensions over Tibet have also fueled broader regional conflicts. India and China, both of which border the Himalayan territory, have clashed multiple times over territorial disputes. Their most serious confrontation in recent years occurred in 2023, resulting in casualties on both sides.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that as diplomatic friction continues, analysts warn that Tibet remains a volatile issue in the broader context of US-China relations.
