China would extend necessary support to Bangladesh for countering the negative impact of US President Donald Trump’s additional tariffs as they are part of the superpower’s “coercion tactics”, said Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen on Tuesday.
On Tuesday night, the Bangladeshi government delegation will sit for the final round of talks with the US, aiming to reduce the reciprocal tariffs to at most 20% from Trump’s planned 35%.
The reciprocal tariffs imposed on a range of economies, including close US allies, are a violation of WTO principles, and could worsen global economic turmoil, Yao Wan said while speaking at a discussion session at the National Press Club.
The Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) organized the session.
The Chinese envoy also said that Beijing wants to work with Dhaka and Islamabad under a trilateral framework for helping the South Asian countries preserve their “territorial sovereignty.”
The trilateral cooperation would build on support for economic development and prosperity, and is not aimed at any outside party, Yao Wan said.
He noted that no South Asian country has officially expressed concerns at the cooperation, hinting at increased uneasiness in the Indian media landscape and policymaking circles over potential risks to Delhi’s regional hegemony.
China would work with Bangladesh and Pakistan for helping build developed and prosperous neighbours, Yao Wan added.
He also claimed that returning the Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh camps to Myanmar is the only sustainable solution to the migrant crisis.
China is working with Bangladesh and Myanmar to ensure the repatriation, but success cannot be achieved due to the ongoing turmoil in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
