The High Court has granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, former spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in a sedition case filed in Chattogram.
On Wednesday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza delivered the verdict after a final hearing on the rule issued regarding Das’s bail. The court had earlier fixed April 30 for the hearing following a time petition from the state.
Chinmoy’s lawyer, Advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, argued for bail citing his client’s deteriorating health condition. Representing the state were Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and Deputy Attorney Generals Md Abdul Baset and Farid Uddin Khan. The court had initially issued a rule on February 4, asking why Das should not be granted bail. It appeared on the cause list several times before reaching Wednesday’s final hearing.
Das was previously denied bail by the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on January 2. Following that, he sought interim bail from the High Court on January 12. His arrest on November 26, 2024, led to violent clashes at the Chattogram court premises, during which lawyer Saiful Islam was killed. This triggered a boycott of court proceedings and multiple delays in the bail hearing.
The sedition case was filed on October 31, 2024, by Firoz Khan, then General Secretary of the BNP’s Chandgaon Mohora Ward unit. Khan was later relieved of his party duties, and several individuals, including Chinmoy Das, were arrested in connection with the case.
