Tensions flared at Rajshahi University on Saturday as students protesting the reinstatement of the “ward quota” system clashed with faculty and administrative officials, leaving several injured.
Following the incident, students confined Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Main Uddin inside the Zubery building, creating a tense situation on campus.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation began around 4:00 pm when the pro-VC and proctor appeared on the building’s corridor. Students surrounded them, chanting slogans against the quota system. A scuffle broke out when a teacher and a university printing press officer tried to restrain the students.
Several students, including Salahuddin Ammar, former coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, and Al Shahriar Shuvo, general secretary of the unit Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, were injured.
The Pro VC later moved to the second floor, where students continued to barricade him.
Prof Kamal Uddin of Persian Language and Literature Department and Registrar Prof Iftikharul Alam Masud, among others, rushed to the scene to mediate.
Earlier, students had locked the residences of the pro-VC and the proctor, forcing them to relocate to the Zubery building, where the confrontation escalated.
Attempts to contact University Vice-Chancellor Prof Saleh Hasan Naqib for comment were unsuccessful.
