At least 25 people, including police officers and army personnel, were injured during a violent clash between two groups of villagers in Madaripur’s Rajoir upazila on Saturday night, following a long-standing feud.
A long-running dispute between residents of Badarpasha and Kundupara villages in Madaripur’s Rajoir upazila erupted into a violent clash on Saturday (April 12) at around 9 PM near Rajoir Bepareepara Mor. The confrontation left 25 people injured, including police officers, villagers, and a member of the armed forces. Police and army personnel were later deployed to bring the situation under control.
According to local sources and police reports, the conflict stemmed from a dispute that began on April 2 when youths from Badarpasha village, led by Junayed Akon, set off fireworks near Fuchka Bridge. This act was opposed by another group from Kundupara, leading to an altercation. The tension escalated the next morning when Junayed and his associates allegedly attacked and broke the leg of Zubayer Khan, a member of the rival group.
Following the assault, Zubayer’s elder brother, Anik Khan, filed a case at Rajoir Police Station naming six individuals including Junayed and mentioning several unidentified others. The filing of the case further fueled tensions, culminating in Saturday night’s clash where villagers armed with homemade weapons clashed for several hours.
During the violence, several shops at Bepareepara Mor were looted and vandalized. The police and army were called to the scene and, after hours of effort, managed to restore order.
Among the injured were police officers including Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Masud Khan, OC (Investigation) Sanchay Kumar Ghosh, and SI Tarek. At least 12 law enforcement personnel were reportedly injured by brickbats thrown during the melee. Several villagers also sustained injuries and received treatment at Rajoir Upazila Health Complex.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that OC Masud Khan confirmed the incident and noted that the situation is now under control. “The clash was the result of a previous enmity. Both villagers and law enforcers were injured, but we have taken control of the area,” he said.
