Tension and scuffles broke out between two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday (August 17), centering around the arrival of several central JCD leaders including General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.

According to eyewitnesses and campus JCD activists, around noon, General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, Senior Vice President Abu Afsan Mohammad Yahia, and several other central leaders arrived on campus to attend a doa mahfil and exchange views with journalists. At the time, JU JCD convener Zahid Uddin Babor, member secretary Wasim Ahmed, and other leaders were present at the faculty lounge of the university cafeteria, while the rest of the activists gathered at the cafeteria premises.

Shortly after, another group of about 50 disgruntled JCD activists (reportedly denied expected positions in the newly announced committees) staged a motorbike showdown and assembled in front of the cafeteria. They allegedly chased several individuals labeling them as outsiders and then tried to meet with the central leaders inside the faculty lounge. When Babor and Wasim’s followers barred them from entering through the gate, tensions flared and sporadic clashes broke out.

The disgruntled activists alleged that on August 8, the JU JCD extended committee and 17 hall committees were announced, which included leaders linked with Chhatra League, Chhatra Shibir, expelled members, and individuals accused of extortion. In protest, they had been demonstrating since that night. They further claimed that since the controversial appointments, the convener, member secretary, and top five JU JCD leaders had not appeared on campus.

In response, Convener Zahid Uddin Babor said, “Among those who created the chaos were some expelled members of our organization. Additionally, a vested group is involved in this incident. A committee has been announced, and while there may be some inconsistencies, we are working to resolve them. But certain groups are trying to exploit the situation to create unrest.”

Regarding the presence of outsiders, he said, “When central leaders of the organization come to campus, it is natural for leaders and activists from different units to gather and meet them.”

Commenting on the situation, JU Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam stated, “There was some trouble between two JCD factions over internal issues. The proctorial team managed to control the situation. The campus environment is now normal, and everyone has been urged to maintain peace.”
