Tensions between Awami League and BNP supporters in Faridpur erupted into violent clashes, resulting in the vandalism of 30 homes and injuries to at least eight people. The incident occurred on Monday morning in Fushra village, Kanipur Union.
In a fresh outbreak of violence over local dominance, supporters of the Awami League and BNP clashed in Faridpur’s Fushra village, located in the Kanipur Union of the district. The confrontation, which began around 8:30 AM on Monday, lasted for an hour and resulted in widespread property damage and several injuries.
At least 30 homes were attacked, looted, and vandalized during the clash. Eight people were injured, with three requiring hospitalization at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
The conflict between the two parties was rooted in the struggle for local power, with one faction led by Akkas Matubbor, president of the Awami League’s 9th Ward, and the other by Hashem Khan, president of the BNP’s 9th Ward. Local sources reported that the clash was triggered by a dispute on Sunday over fishing in a pond.
Despite a mediation by police the previous night, where both sides agreed to avoid further violence, tensions remained high, leading to this morning’s violence. Initially, Hashem Khan’s supporters attacked Akkas Matubbor’s house and those of his supporters, vandalizing properties and looting livestock. In retaliation, Akkas’s supporters attacked Hashem Khan’s home.
The violence left significant property damage in its wake, with cattle and valuables looted from the homes. Police, along with military personnel and RAB forces, arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.
The conflict between Akkas Matubbor and Hashem Khan had been simmering for some time, primarily due to competing claims for dominance in the area. Both sides have blamed each other for the violence. Akkas Matubbor claimed that despite an earlier agreement to cease hostilities, Hashem Khan’s supporters launched the attack. Conversely, Hashem Khan accused Akkas’s supporters of initiating the violence at his residence.
LIberty News’ local correspondent state the local police have increased their presence in the area, although no formal complaints had been filed by either party as of the latest update from the police.
