In a joint crackdown on illegal fishing, the Coast Guard and Fisheries Department seized Hilsa worth Tk 4.5 million from three trawlers in Hatia, detaining 56 fishermen early Tuesday.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard, in coordination with the Department of Fisheries, conducted a special operation in the Hiron Union’s Tankighat and Chairman Ghat areas of Hatia on Tuesday around 1:00 a.m. During the raid, officials intercepted three fishing boats—FB Amena, FB Niha, and FB Babul—and recovered 6,000 kilograms (150 maunds) of Hilsa, valued at approximately Tk 4.5 million.
The Coast Guard also detained 56 fishermen for violating the government-imposed seasonal ban on marine fishing, which spans from April 15 to June 11 each year. The restriction aims to preserve marine biodiversity, ensure sustainable fishing, and protect the breeding cycle of fish.
According to Coast Guard Media Officer Lt. Commander BN Harun-or-Rashid, the seized fish were later distributed among local madrassas, orphanages, and low-income families in the presence of Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Fayzur Rahman.
The authorities imposed a fine of Tk 360,000 on the owners of the three trawlers. However, the detained fishermen were released upon signing bonds with a commitment not to engage in illegal fishing.
Fisheries Officer, Md. Fayzur Rahman emphasized that strict enforcement of the ban is vital to conserving marine fish stocks and ensuring long-term sustainability of the sector.
